Bacteria are the number one cause of smelly shoe or feet. When they settle in your shoes, it'd take a lot of stress to get them out. What if you know no good trick or hack? That's going to be bad.

Wearing no socks isn't a major cause of shoe odor but it is a contributing factor. This is because when bacteria settles in your shoes and you wear them without socks, they transfer onto your feet and may lead to foot disease.

Smelly shoes are annoying and so frustrating but these home remedies can resolve and restore your shoe to their previous state.

Best Home Remedies for Stinky Shoes (DIY)

1. Remove Shoe Odour With Orange Peels.

Orange peels are highly scented and refreshing. Next time you see oranges at home, make sure you keep the peels for your shoes.
  • Cut the peels into small but sizeable shapes.
  • Place the orange peels in your pair of shoes.
  • Leave it overnight and repeat as often as you can.

2. Freeze Your Stinky Shoe.

The temperature in a freezer is unbearable for bacteria. Put your stinky shoes in your freezer and leave it overnight or a few hours (3-4hrs). Remove the shoes once it has been frozen and dry them outside in the sun. Be sure it dries up well before putting them on again.

3. Use Vinegar.

Vinegar has been used to solve several problems over the years and now its time our shoes benefit from its effective remedy.
  • Make a mixture of 50% water and 50% vinegar.
  • Deep a cotton ball in the solution and leave it to soak.
  • Remove and drop the cotton ball into your shoe and leave it overnight.
  • Do it as often as you can for good result.

4. Use Black Tea Bags.

Take 4 bags of black tea and drop them into a pot containing 2 liters of water.
  • Heat the solution between 5-10mins and remove the tea bags and let it cool down for few minutes.
  • Place two tea bags in each shoe and leave it overnight.
  • Repeat daily for good result.
You can also soak your feet in the water you kept the tea bags in, it works like magic. The tannin in the black tea kills bacteria leaving your feet clean and fresh. Do this once a week for good result.

5. Soak It in Alcohol.

While some love it, others hate it. Bacteria is no good friend of alcohol. Alcohol disinfects the shoe, giving it a new and decent smell.
  • Get some alcohol from wherever you can get one from but make sure it's either 100% or a good liquor.
  • Deep a pair of socks into the alcohol and leave it to soak. (Alternatively, you can also use cotton. I used socks because it can absorb more alcohol)
  • Place a sock each in each pair of shoe and leave it overnight.
  • Repeat as often as you can for a better result.

6. Baking Soda Works Just Fine.

Baking soda has its own great use. It is a deodorizer which helps kills and prevents bacteria from growing. This is how you use baking soda to remove the smell from shoes.
  • Get a handful or spoonful of baking soda.
  • Sprinkle them into the shoe and leave it overnight.
  • Repeat the process daily for good result
Caution: Make sure you remove the baking soda before putting on your shoes.

7. Others Swear By Baby Powder.

Baby powder can make your feet and shoe smell good. Apply baby powder on the feet each time you're about putting on your shoes to help keep the smell away.

Caution: Do not use baby powder with strong scents as it may worsen the situation.

8. Use a Foot & Shoe Spray (Deodorant)

A deodorizing shoe spray is another good way to freshen shoes. This is a quick and effective remedy for active walkers.

The deodorant spray provides natural anti-fungal protection for your feet.
